    How is cabin baggage measured?

    amin bram

Carry-on luggage is measured according to its actual exterior dimensions, not its theoretical volume. Airlines check that the luggage complies with the maximum authorized sizes to ensure it can be stored in the cabin without compromising passenger safety or comfort.

Measurement always applies to the luggage as it is presented at boarding, meaning packed, not empty. Luggage that is compliant when empty may therefore become non-compliant once packed.

    How airlines check carry-on luggage

    • The luggage is measured handles, wheels, and pockets included
    • Checks are performed using a metal sizer located at the airport
    • The carry-on luggage must fit entirely into the sizer, without forcing
    • Overstuffed soft bags may be refused even if they appear compact

    • The verification may take place:
      • at check-in
      • at the boarding gate

    • In case of non-compliance, the luggage may be placed in the hold for an additional fee

FAQ – Measuring and checking carry-on luggage

    Are dimensions always checked?

No. Checks are not systematic, but they are frequent on full flights or with strict airlines.

Do exterior pockets count towards the measurement?

Yes. Any item protruding from the carry-on luggage is taken into account during measurement.

Is a soft bag more likely to pass?

Not necessarily. If it is too full and does not fit in the sizer, it will be refused, even if it is soft.

Is weight measured at the same time as size?

Sometimes. The priority remains size, but carry-on luggage that is obviously too heavy can also be checked or refused.
