What are the new rules for carry-on luggage?
amin bram
Since the summer of 2025, harmonized European rules have required all A4E member airlines (Air France, KLM, Lufthansa, EasyJet, Ryanair, etc.) to allow one small carry-on bag with standardized minimum dimensions free of charge: 40 × 30 × 15 cm. This is now a legal guarantee, even on low-cost carriers, to improve price transparency.
New rules to know:
- 1 small carry-on bag free of charge, at least 40 × 30 × 15 cm, to be placed under the seat
- Airlines may offer larger sizes as a paid option (e.g., 55 × 35 × 25 cm)
- Wheeled suitcases often exceed 15 cm in depth
- Liquids in the cabin remain limited to 100 ml per bottle (1 L total max)
- Power banks >100 Wh are prohibited
- Airlines must clearly state baggage fees at the time of booking
Once the new 40×30×15 cm standard is fully implemented, we will offer a dedicated range of carry-on bags perfectly suited to these dimensions.

FAQ on the new 2025 carry-on luggage standards
What is the standard size for free carry-on luggage in 2025?
Minimum 40 × 30 × 15 cm (dimensions guaranteed by all A4E European airlines).
Can I take a classic carry-on suitcase for free?
Not necessarily. The 55×35×25 cm formats often remain a paid option, except with premium or higher class fares.
Are backpacks affected?
Yes. As long as they meet the dimensions for under the seat, they are included for free.
Can I have a second carry-on bag?
Only if your fare allows it. Otherwise, only the small under-seat format is guaranteed for free.
What if my carry-on bag is slightly too big?
It may be refused or charged at the boarding gate. It is better to plan ahead with a model that complies with the new dimensions.
